Our Legacy

 

The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale nominates members to serve a two-year term on the Board of Directors of one of our “legacy organizations” — organizations our League has and with which we maintain support through our volunteer efforts and community engagement. Members selected to serve as board members function as the organization’s liaison to the League, communicating volunteer opportunities and organizational updates. The Community Affairs Committee also oversees the State Public Affairs Committee in its efforts to support legislation advancing the interests of women, children, and the communities we serve.

Our Legacy Projects

FLITE Center

The result of a collaborative effort between the Community Fund of Broward, United Way, and the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale to meet the needs of youths aging out of foster care by providing a single point of contact for receipt of services, the FLITE Center was founded in 2009. FLITE continues to function as a comprehensive resource and supportive environment for this youth population as they transition into adulthood by promoting personal growth and assisting them with the development of life skills.

Jack & Jill Center

Founded in 1942 by the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale in response to the increased need for childcare brought on by women entering the workforce during WWII, the Jack and Jill Center is the oldest nonprofit provider of early childhood education in Broward County.

SOS Children's Village

Founded in 1993, SOS Children’s Villages is a community in Coconut Creek comprised of 13 single-family homes, housing 72 foster children aged from newborn to 18, with a special emphasis on keeping biological sibling groups together. Its mission is to offer a safe, healing, and supportive environment for the children it serves by providing resources for academic improvement, building social skills, managing behavior, and processing their emotions, which include a mental health counseling program, medical services, planned activities, tutoring, mentoring, and independent life skills classes.

KID, Inc. (Kids in Distress)

Beginning as a small shelter in 1979, KID Inc., formerly Kids In Distress, now operates the five-acre Leo Goodman Foundation campus and Wilton Manors and a satellite office in Palm Beach where they provide a comprehensive continuum of care that fills the gaps and meets the needs of at-risk children and families in the community. Specifically, KID provides programs that work for the prevention of child abuse, the preservation of the family, and the treatment of abused and neglected children.

Nancy J. Cotterman Center

The Nancy J. Cotterman Center serves as Broward County’s only Certified Sexual Assault Program, Accredited Child Advocacy Center, and Child Protection Team. Administered by the Broward County government, NJCC provides counseling to sexual assault and child sexual abuse survivors and their families; services and expertise in evaluating and investigating child abuse allegations; crisis intervention, medical care, and victim advocacy for survivors of sexual assault; and comprehensive services and resources for victims of human trafficking.

Broward Health

Broward Health is a public, nonprofit hospital system that has served Fort Lauderdale for over 85 years. It is governed by the Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, a seven-member board appointed by Florida’s governor, but maintains an advisory board comprised of community stakeholders, including a member of our League.
